How to find the BPM of a song

  1. Open the BPM finder

Go to the free BPM finder on the home page and upload a track from your device. The audio tempo detector accepts common music formats, including MP3, WAV and FLAC.

  2. Run tempo detection

Once the file is prepared, choose Find pitch / tempo. Analysis covers the full recording within the five-minute upload limit.

  3. Read and use the result

The chat highlights the estimated tempo in BPM alongside the musical key. Keep the result, change the track’s speed, or finish the chat.

What does BPM tell you?

BPM means beats per minute: it describes how quickly the musical pulse repeats. A steady track at 120 BPM has two beats each second. It does not tell you the song’s key, the number of notes in a melody, or whether a section feels busy.

A song BPM finder helps you choose a starting tempo for a recording session, compare tracks before a DJ set, or set a practice pace. Use the reading as a guide and check it against the pulse you hear.

Full-track analysis, with room for musical judgment

This tempo finder considers the entire prepared recording rather than only the preview excerpt. It combines estimates from sections of the track into one overall BPM value. A live performance that speeds up or slows down may not have one tempo that fits every bar.

Half-time and double-time interpretations are common: 70 and 140 BPM can describe different levels of the same rhythmic pattern. Weak drums, syncopation, long ambient passages and changing time feel can also make automatic BPM detection uncertain. Some recordings have no clear beat to detect.

For a quick listening check, count the beats you hear for 15 seconds and multiply by four. Our tool analyzes uploaded audio; it does not listen through your microphone or provide a tap-tempo pad.

From a tempo reading to a track you can use

If a recording is too fast for practice, our tempo changer overview explains how to slow it down while keeping its pitch. For example, 120 BPM at 80% becomes approximately 96 BPM. Open the audio tool on the home page to preview the change before exporting the whole file.

Need to understand the harmony too? The song key finder explains the major or minor key shown with your BPM result. Both readings are available in the same analysis.

You can also start from the Pitch Tempo home page and choose between finding key and BPM or changing the audio after upload.

Questions before you start

Is this BPM finder free?

Yes. Guests get 3 new chats per 24 hours; free accounts get 5 per hour. Analysis, previews and downloads within an existing chat do not start a new chat.

Can I find BPM from an MP3 or WAV file?

Yes. Upload the actual audio file. This MP3 BPM finder also accepts WAV, FLAC, M4A and the other formats listed below.

Why is the detected BPM half or twice what I expected?

The same music can have a strong pulse at more than one rhythmic level. Listen to the beat and compare the estimate with half or twice that number before using it as your project tempo.

Does the BPM detector change my audio?

Finding the key and BPM only analyzes the track. Choose Change pitch / tempo separately if you want an edited version.

Can I analyze a Spotify or YouTube link?

This workflow starts with an audio file on your device. It does not import streaming links or look up songs by title.
